Boko Haram: Much Ado about the Indolent Representatives
By Oluwaseyi Oduyela
I have watched and read a lot of abuses on Jonathan concerning the Boko Haram’s senseless attacks and none against members of the National Assembly-Senate and House- who receive millions in salaries. Recently, soldiers turned their guns on one of their commanders and it has just been played down. Such act is taken serious.
Members of the National Assembly with oversight functions have not said anything, nor acted.
So does it not make sense to act all the lame Assembly members what their roles are in government? Why do we think they are different from Jonathan?
In a sane government, the National Assembly would investigate why the soldiers committed mutiny. They will want to know why Jonathan’s Security agencies have not caught Shekau and rescued the girls.
Surely, there are Senators and Federal Representative members from Chiboki, there are Senators and Federal Representatives from Plateau states and these lame and useless guys are getting paid monthly doing nothing in the National assembly yet they the guy without shoes for everything.
These Assembly members are more responsible to their constituents than Jonathan. These people supposedly gave them the mandate to be in Abuja.
I think why they don’t care is because the people didn’t elect them. Elections never had consequences in Nigeria. This they know and that is why they could care less as long as the people focus on Jonathan, it’s good for them.
The question is how will people sleep at night when they see their fellow citizens being butchered for no reason? Why do they think it is ok for them go about their business not taking any serious and meaningful actions? Many police officers and soldiers have been killed by Boko Haram and these National Assembly members don’t think it is important for the government to do anything about it.
They are busy crossing from PDP to APC and crossing back to PDP that the well-being of their citizens is now an option not a priority to them.
The politicians should have used this opportunity to come together and in unity fight Boko Haram. Most states from the South have kept mute because it’s not happening in their states. Either they like it or not there is just one Nigeria but they are all too busy with politics of who succeeds who.
There is more of politics of exclusion in Nigeria than that of inclusion; the politics of “us against them.” What is happening in the north isn’t Northern issue is a national issue. It is not Hausa issue and not Muslims’ issue.
The members of the Nigerian National Assembly are nothing but a bunch of disguised unemployed men and women getting paid doing absolutely nothing. At least Jonathan still speaks and his wife still pretends to be crying what have been the reactions or actions of the representatives of the people?
